Advanced English Tense Review (ESL, EFL, TESL, TOEFL) Its back-to-school time. Before you or your students get down to studying the specifics of various grammar structures, it is a good idea to review the basic English tenses. If you are an advanced student, a review will help remind you of the tenses and also point out any weaknesses or insecurity that you may have. If you are an upper-level student but not yet aware of all the tenses, these exercises will make a good introduction to some of the important structures ahead. For an overview of conjugation in detail of all 12 tenses in English, use the tense tables for reference. Teachers can use theses guides on how to teach tenses for further activities and lesson plans in class The following exercises serve two purposes: Re-familiarization of standard tense names Tense conjugation practice The first exercise is very important as you may not remember exactly the names of the various tenses. This exercise will help you remember the names of the tenses. Once you have finished the first exercise, read the text through one more time to familiarize yourself with it completely. Go on to the next exercise that asks you to conjugate the verbs in the extract. You should be very familiar with the extract so you can concentrate on the correct conjugation. Notice how the tenses relate to each other in time. Remember that many verbs are conjugated based on how they relate to one another. In fact, he was only two years old when he first flew to the US. His mother is Italian and his father is American. John was born in France, but his parents had met in Cologne, Germany after they had been living there for five years. They met one day while Johns father was reading a book in the library and his mother sat down beside him. Anyway, John travels a lot because his parents also travel a lot. As a matter of fact, John is visiting his parents in France at the moment. He lives in New York now, but has been visiting his parents for the past few weeks. He really enjoys living in New York, but he also loves coming to visit his parents at least once a year. This year he has flown over 50,000 miles for his job. He has been working for Jackson Co. for almost two years now. Hes pretty sure that hell be working for them next year as well. His job requires a lot of travel. In fact, by the end of this year, hell have traveled over 120,000 miles! His next journey will be to Australia. He really doesnt like going to Australia because it is so far. This time he is going to fly from Paris after a meeting with the companys French partner. Hell have been sitting for over 18 hours by the time he arrives! John was talking with his parents earlier this evening when his girlfriend from New York telephoned to let him know that Jackson Co. had decided to merge with a company in Australia. The two companies had been negotiating for the past month, so it really wasnt much of a surprise. Of course, this means that John will have to catch the next plane back to New York. Last Glacial Maximum - Last Major Global Climate Change The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) refers to the most recent period in earths history when the glaciers were at their thickest and the sea levels at their lowest, roughly between 24,000ââ¬â18,000 calendar years ago (cal bp). During the LGM, continent-wide ice sheets covered high-latitude Europe and North America, and sea levels were between 400ââ¬â450 feet (120ââ¬â135 meters) lower than they are today. At the height of the Last Glacial Maximum, all of Antarctica, large parts of Europe, North America, and South America, and small parts of Asia were covered in a steeply domed and thick layer of ice. In the lead up to the LGM between 29,000 and 21,000 cal bp, our planet saw constant or slowly increasing ice volumes, with the sea level reaching its lowest level (about 450 feet below todays norm) when there was about 52x10(6) cubic kilometers more glacial ice than there is today. Characteristics of the LGM Researchers are interested in the Last Glacial Maximum because of when it happened: it was the most recent globally impacting climate change, and it happened and to some degree affected the speed and trajectory of the colonization of the American continents. The characteristics of the LGM that scholars use to help identify the impacts of such a major change include fluctuations in effective sea level, and the decrease and subsequent rise in carbon as parts per million in our atmosphere during that period. Both of those characteristics are similar- but opposite to- the climate change challenges we are facing today: during the LGM, both the sea level and percentage of carbon in our atmosphere were substantially lower than what we see today. We do not as yet know the entire impact of what that means to our planet, but the effects are currently undeniable. The table below shows the changes in effective sea level in the past 35,000 years (Lambeck and colleagues) and parts per million of atmospheric carbon (Cotton and colleagues). In North America during the LGM, all of Canada, the southern coast of Alaska, and the top 1/4 of the United States were covered with ice extending as far south as the states of Iowa and West Virginia. Glacial ice also covered the western coast of South America, and in the Andes extending into Chile and most of Patagonia. In Europe, the ice extended as far south as Germany and Poland; in Asia ice sheets reached Tibet. Although they saw no ice, Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania were a single landmass; and mountains throughout the world held glaciers. The ocean stores carbon (called carbon sequestration) when the ice is low, and so the net influx of carbon in our atmosphere which is typically caused by cooling gets stored in our oceans. However, a lower sea level also increases salinity, and that and other physical changes to the large-scale ocean currents and sea ice fields also contribute to carbon sequestration. By the 1950s, scientists such as Hans Suess and Charles David Keeling began to recognize the inherent dangers of human-added carbon in the atmosphere. The global mean sea level (GMSL), according to the Environmental Protection Agency, has risen nearly 10 inches since 1880, and by all measures appears to be accelerating.à Most early measures of current sea level rise have been based on changes in tides at the local level. More recent data comes from satellite altimetry that samples the open oceans, allowing for precise quantitative statements. That measurement began in 1993, and the 25-year record indicates that the global mean sea level has risen at a rate of between 3/-.4 millimeters per year, or a total of nearly 3 inches (or 7.5 cm) since records began. More and more studies indicate that unless carbon emissions are decreased, an additional 2ââ¬â5 feet (.65ââ¬â1.30 m) rise by 2100 is likely.à Specific Studies and Long-Term Predictions U.S. Fish and Wildlife ecologist Phillip Hughes inspects dead buttonwood trees which have succumbed to salt water incursion in Big Pine Key, Florida. Qu and colleagues (2019) studied 25 tidal stations in China, Japan and Vietnam and tidal data indicate that the 1993ââ¬â2016 sea level rise was 3.2 mm per year (or 3 inches).à Long-term data have been collected throughout the world, and estimates are that by 2100, a 3ââ¬â6 feet (1ââ¬â2 meter) rise in the Mean Global Sea Level is possible, accompanied by a 1.5ââ¬â2 degree Celsius in overall warming. Some of the direst suggest a 4.5-degree rise is not impossible if carbon emissions are not reduced.à à The Timing of the American Colonization According to the most current theories, the LGM impacted the progress of human colonization of the American continents. During the LGM, entry into the Americas was blocked by ice sheets: many scholars now believe that the colonists began entering into the Americas across what was Beringia, perhaps as early as 30,000 years ago. According to genetic studies, humans were stranded on the Bering Land Bridge during the LGM between 18,000ââ¬â24,000 cal BP, trapped by the ice on the island before they were set free by the retreating ice. Whether the story of the young lovers is portrayed on television, film, Broadway, or in music lyrics, people have always enjoyed the story of Romeo and Juliet. Typically the television shows main character earns the role of either Romeo or Juliet, depending on his or her gender. The opposing love interest role is played by a passionate character that appears to have a crush on the main character. By creating these episodes, the writers and producers help remind viewers of the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet. Music plays a prominent role in many cultures throughout the world. The lyrics of much of todays popular music, focuses on love, relationships, and lifes struggles. Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet also demonstrates these same topics. The tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet is recounted in the lyrics of artists including, Taylor Swift and the Dire Straits. In the song Love Story, Taylor Swift recites the story of Romeo and Juliet throughout her lyrics. She sings, We were both young when I first saw you/ I close my eyes, And the flashback starts/Im standing there / On a balcony in summer air/ See the lights, See the party, the ball gowns /I see you make your way through the crowd/ And say hello/ little did I knowà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦. Taylor Swift grasped the tragic story of love lost and fashioned it into her own song. Romeo and Juliet by the Dire Straits translates Shakespeares story into modern slang. The band sings, Juliet says, Hey, its Romeo, you nearly gave me a heart attack!, Hes underneath the window, shes singing, Hey la, my boyfriends back. You shouldnt come around here singing up to people like thatAnyway, what you gonna do about it?' Through their music, the Dire Straits recreate the balcony scene where Romeo and Juliet profess their love for one another. Several music artists have covered this song including, The Killers, The Indigo Girls, and Lisa Mitchell. Today, many artists refer to Romeo and Juliet for lyrical inspiration. The love story of Romeo and Juliet is frequently portrayed on the big screen and the stage. Cinematic productions such as The Ringer, West Side Story, Gnomeo and Juliet, The Baz Romeo and Juliet, and the Zeffereli version of Romeo and Juliet, utilize allusions from Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet. The Ringer is a movie about an average, working-class man who in an effort to repay a large debt to his friend, tampers with the Special Olympics and pretends that he is a special needs athlete. The movie showcases special needs athletes working together in their free time to produce their version of Romeo and Juliet for the stage. The play helps to solidify the relationship between the main character and his love interest. Gnomeo and Juliet is a computer animated movie that takes kids on a wild journey through the story of Romeo and Juliet. Gnomeo and Juliet is about two rivaling gnome families: the Montagues and the Capulets. The movie takes the general concepts of Romeo and Juliet and transforms it into a kid-friendly adventure that retells the basic story of Romeo and Juliet. West Side Story is about two gangs: the Puerto Rican Sharks and the rich, white Jets. The movie is set in New York City in the 1950s. The Sharks and the Jets are from different backgrounds which has caused a rivalry to form between the two groups. A love affair between members of each gang comes between the rivalry, as it did in Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet. The forbidden love results in feuding between the gangs. West Side Story has also been adapted for the main stage and remains in production both on and off Broadway. Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet continues to serve as a traditional love story which inspires artists to create and fashion their own unique interpretations through various forms of entertainment. Jan Scholte (2000:39) wrote about globalisation, that the only consensus is that it is contested. ââ¬Å"People have held widely differing views regarding definition, scale, chronology, impact and policy (Scholte 2000:39). Use of the term globalisation is high and yet a common understanding of its meaning and where it fits in the history of mankind is frequently vague and based on assumption rather than evidence (Scholte 2000:1). Using one definition from many, of globalisation and globalism and the changes through history that sociologists have used to make sense of the phenomenon, this essay will demonstrate that while globalisation represents both a new and old period in human history, it can only be called radical in its recent state. The working definition of globalisation used in this essay, has been separated from Jan Scholteââ¬â¢s five broad definitions (2000:15). Deterritorialisation or supraterritorioality is based on the process of change to geography in which territorial boundaries become less important (Scholte 2000:16). This concept encompasses all other definitions that Scholte identified, as it has a wide focus which allows each to be occurring because of this change in geography. Robin Cohen and Paul Kennedyââ¬â¢s definitions of globalisation (Cohen and Kennedy 2000:11) are not in opposition with the concept of supraterritoriality, describing it ââ¬Ëas the ways in which the world is being knitted togetherââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëthe objective, external ties that bind us togetherââ¬â¢. To fully understand globalisation it is necessary to differentiate it from globalism. It is described as the ââ¬Ësubjective realmââ¬â¢, unlike globalisation which refers to a series of ââ¬Ëobjective changes in the world that are partly outside usââ¬â¢ (Cohan and Kennedy 2000:34). To simplify, this describes the collective way in which the world views itself as a result of globalisation. Globalism is seen as a result of globalisation and as such quite a new phenomenon (Cohan and Kennedy 2000:34). It is quite important to make this differentiation as many times when writers are referring to globalisation as new phenomenon they are using examples that are in fact forms of globalism, a distinctly different concept. Is globalisation a new or old? Opinions on this tend to cross over while identifying different phases. Cohen and Kennedy believe that globalisation can be traced back through history, but that its processes have accelerated in recent years (Cohan and Kennedy 2000:34).
